of the Gaps
is made by the author of There
Are No Gods (TheraminTrees)
in which he speaks about the psychological manipulation behind the
pseudoscience.
Pseudoscience is a system of belief and practice falsely presented as the fruit of the scientific method.
Religion and pseudoscience can drift into each other but generally speaking there is no requirement in pseudoscience to believe in any Gods, nonetheless the social and psychological parallels are remarkable.
Like religion pseudoscience offers the false promise of easy answers to complex questions through unsubstantiated claims of esoteric knowledge. Like religion its proponents deflect criticism with all the same fallacious defenses.
Pseudoscience often strikes educated, rational people as too nonsensical and preposterous to be dangerous… this is not a wise attitude.

Veruit
de meest beroemde en beruchte ontsnappingskunstenaar was de
Amerikaanse variétéartiest Harry Houdini (1874 – 1926).
Hij was van Hongaarse oorsprong. Er bestond geen gevangenis,
dwangbuis of handboeien, waaruit hij niet kon ontsnappen. Houdini
legt in zijn boek Handcuff Secrets uit hoe hij dit
klaarspeelde. De basis vcoor zijn vaardigheid was een fenomenale
kennis van sloten. Verder gebruikte hij bij zijn voorstellingen,
die massaal werden bezocht, verstopte sleutels, ijzeren pinnetjes
en andere hulpmiddelen, zoals een verlengde sleutel, die hij in
zijn mond verborgen hield.
Slechts
eenmaal in zijn carrière lukte het hem niet om te ontsnappen.
Bezoekers aan de show werden steevast uitgenodigd om sleutels om
te draaien, gespen aan te trekken en kettingen vast te maken. Een
assisterende politieman blokkeerde de handboeien van Houdini door
loden kogeltjes in het slot te laten vallen. Bij die gelegenheid
moest de beroemdheid zich los laten zagen.
Duikers,
net als vissers overigens, hebben de neiging om de vissen, die ze
onder water ontmoeten, groter in te schatten, dan ze in
werkelijkheid zijn.
Dit
kun je ze echter niet kwalijk nemen. Lichtstralen veranderen van
richting, bij de overgang van lucht naar water.
Hierdoor
lijken zeezoogdieren, vissen, collega-duikers en objecten zo'n 33
procent groter, dan ze in realiteit zijn.
Ook
de waargenomen kleuren onder water zijn misleidend. De kleuren,
waaruit het zonlicht is opgebouwd op verschillende diepten worden
geabsorbeerd. Eerst verdwijnt het rood, gevolgd door oranje, geel,
groen en blauw. Een duiker, die beweert op 30 meter diepte, een
bruin-grijze vis te hebben gezien, kan een blauw-rode vis hebben
ontmoet.
