In de bodem van de planeet Mars blijkt water te zitten. De verkenner Curiosity heeft daar voor het eerst sporen van gevonden. Dat staat donderdag in het gezaghebbende wetenschapsblad Science.
Het water kwam aan het licht toen de Curiosity een schep Marsgrond nam en die in een speciale ruimte van het karretje stopte. In de 'oven' werd de grond verhit tot 835 graden. Daarbij kwamen gassen vrij, waaronder waterdamp.
„We weten nu dat er veel water op Mars moet zijn en dat het makkelijk te bereiken is. Als we mensen sturen, hoeven ze alleen wat grond op te graven. Als ze de bodem dan opwarmen, hebben ze water”, aldus hoofdonderzoekster Laurie Leshin. In elke kilo Marsgrond zit ongeveer 20 gram water. Dat is ongeveer een tiende van de hoeveelheid water in de grond op aarde. De ontdekking van water op Mars is bijzonder, maar komt niet helemaal als een verrassing. De Curiosity is bewust naar zijn werkplek gestuurd, een krater bij de evenaar van de planeet. Satellieten hadden gemeten dat daar mineralen in de grond zitten die alleen onder invloed van water kunnen ontstaan. Vorig jaar vond de verkenner kiezelstenen die lang geleden zouden zijn meegevoerd door het water van een beekje. Water is een cruciale voorwaarde voor leven. Toch is dat nog niet gevonden op Mars. Wel ontdekte de Curiosity dit jaar dat leven ooit mogelijk is geweest op Mars. In een rots werden namelijk sporen van de elementen zwavel, stikstof, waterstof, zuurstof, fosfor en koolstof gevonden. Dat zijn de bouwstenen van leven op aarde. Vermoedelijk hadden er in een ver verleden minieme organismen kunnen bestaan op Mars. De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA laat in het midden of die er ook echt zijn geweest. De Curiosity is een rijdend scheikundelaboratorium, dat in november 2011 werd gelanceerd en in augustus vorig jaar op Mars landde. De verkenner woelt het oppervlak om, onderzoekt rotsen, meet gassen in de atmosfeer en neemt foto's. Het project heeft ongeveer 2 miljard dollar (1,6 miljard euro) gekost.

The Bible, we use, is the result of a process of elimination. Existing “spiritual manuscripts”, in use by the early Christians, were left out and sometimes banned as heretical.
The Death Sea-scrolls (found shortly after WW2), the Nag Hamadi-library and other finds delivered original manuscripts, scrolls and even unknown gospels, which still have to find a place in theology and history.

If you read the Bible carefully, you notice, that Genesis contains two creation-stories. In the first one God creates man and woman (equally, simultaniously), from the earth. In Genesis 2, God first creates Adam, who gets bored and frustrated in the Garden of Eden. God hypnotizes him and while Adam is in a deep sleep, he takes a rib and from it creates Eve. This story is one of the biblical archetypes, that led to a, religiously legitimized, lifetime of obedience, submission and possible torture or even death, for women, all through history and all around the world, alThough it is not the only “haunting from the past”.
Judaism and early Christianity were a “literate” society and both produced a lot of scrolls, codexis and books. When finally the content and order of Bible were formalized, many books, gospels and apocalypses were left out. Some circulating books were called heretical and burned. In the last century many of those missing “sources” have been discovered. (Dead sea scrolls, Nag-Hamadi and recently discovered “sources”, hidden in monasteries from the Balkan, the Kaukasus to Ethiopia (the Book of Enoch).

Troebelheid water bepaalt verblijfsduur nanodeeltjes
De troebelheid van het water is bepalend voor de snelheid waarmee nanodeeltjes samenklonteren en onderdeel worden van het sediment. Dit blijkt uit RIVM-onderzoek waarmee Joris Quik maandag 23 sepetember promoveert aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. De bevindingen dragen bij aan de verbetering van huidige methodes om risico’s van nanomaterialen in water te beoordelen.
Nanodeeltjes kunnen schadelijk zijn voor planten en dieren die in het water leven. Zo blijken er bij koolstofnanodeeltjes op lange termijn al effecten te zijn bij een lage concentratie. De risico’s hangen enerzijds af van de duur van de blootstelling, anderzijds van het gevaar van de deeltjes zelf. "Doordat we meer weten over de invloed van de troebelheid van water op de verblijfsduur van nanodeeltjes, kan bijvoorbeeld beter worden bepaald waar in de Rijn de deeltjes een risico vormen", aldus Quik.

1. De mens is verantwoordelijk voor de opwarming van de aarde Het is zo goed als zeker: de klimaatwijziging en de daaruit volgende opwarming van de aarde is te wijten aan de mens. Dat staat volgens het rapport voor 95 procent vast. Meer dan de helft van de temperatuurstijging is te wijten aan menselijke activiteit, zo staat in het rapport: 'Het is extreem waarschijnlijk dat menselijke invloed de dominante rol speelde in de gemeten opwarming sinds het midden van de 20e eeuw.' De mens heeft wellicht sinds 1750 een impact - het begin van onze continue uitstoot van broeikasgassen. 2. Opwarming met 2° C is gevaarlijk: het kunnen er 4° C worden De opwarming van de aarde wordt vanaf een stijging met 2° C gevaarlijk, aldus het rapport. Die opwarming limiteren op die grens is dan ook een breed gedragen manier om 'gevaarlijke klimaatwijziging' te voorkomen. Een significant deel van de maximale hoeveelheid CO2 die uitgestoten mocht worden om die 2 C° te vermijden, werd al in 2011 bereikt. Verdere uitstoot van broeikasgassen zal de aarde verder opwarmen en het klimaat op verschillende manieren veranderen. Tegen het einde van de 21e eeuw zal de aarde 'wellicht' met 1,5° Celsius opwarmen ten opzichte van de periode 1850-1900. Ten gevolge van het ECS (equilibrium climate sensitivity: de reactie van het klimaat op een verdubbeling van de CO2 in de atmosfeer) kan er echter een temperatuurwijziging optreden tussen 1,5° C en 4,5° C. In 2007 werd nog gedacht aan een stijging tussen 2,0°C en 4,5° C. 3. Zeespiegel stijgt sneller dan verwacht De zeespiegel stijgt sinds het midden van de 19e eeuw sneller dan in de millennia ervoor. Tussen 1901 en 2010 ging de zeespiegel 19 centimeter de hoogte in. En dat zal blijven doorgaan. Het is 'zo goed als zeker' dat de zeespiegel zal blijven stijgen tot na 2100. Die stijging zou van 26 tot 82 centimeter kunnen gaan. Mogelijk smelten de ijskappen van Groenland binnen het millennium, wat voor een stijging van de zeespiegel van 7 meter zou zorgen. In eerdere, voorzichtigere, rapporten werd al gewaarschuwd voor het verdwijnen van steden als New York. 4. Meer en langere hittegolven Het is 'zo goed als zeker' dat de meeste plaatsen op aarde te maken zullen krijgen met meer warme dan koude extreme temperaturen. Hittegolven zullen hoogstwaarschijnlijk vaker voorkomen. Occasionele extreme winters blijven echter niet uit te sluiten. 'Hittegolven zullen zeer waarschijnlijk vaker voorkomen en langer duren', deelde het IPCC-klimaatpanel mee. 5. Afgelopen 10 jaar meer temperatuurrecords gebroken dan ooit Volgens het rapport was het sinds het begin van de weermetingen nooit warmer dan tussen 2001 en 2010. 'In een decennium werden meer temperatuurrecords gebroken dan ooit tevoren', zei de secretaris-generaal van de World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Michel Jarraud. De laatste drie decennia werden steeds warmer, en ze waren stuk voor stuk warmer dan om het even welk decennium sinds 1850. De totale temperatuurstijging (zowel die van het vasteland als van de oceanen) bedraagt voor de periode 1880-2012 zo'n 0,85 graden Celsius. Daarenboven is het 'nagenoeg zeker' dat de bovenste 700 meter van de oceanen warmer werden tussen 1971 en 2010. 'Waarschijnlijk' steeg ook de temperatuur vanaf dieper dan 3.000 meter tussen 1992 en 2005. In de Zuidelijke Oceaan is die stijging het grootst. 6. IJskappen dreigen volledig weg te smelten De ijskappen in Groenland en Antarctica hebben de afgelopen twee decennia aan massa verloren, en gletsjers zijn wereldwijd verder gekrompen, schrijven de wetenschappers. Dat smelten heeft uiteraard een gevolg voor de zeespiegel (zie hoger). 7. Natte gebieden krijgen meer regen, droge gebieden worden droger In het verlengde van de klimaatopwarming verwachten de wetenschappers dat de vochtige regio's op de wereld meer en de drogere nog minder neerslag zullen krijgen. 'Maar er zullen uitzonderingen zijn.' 8. Vertraging van de opwarming is geen reden tot feest Sinds 1998 vertraagt de opwarming van de aarde. Als een van de centrale thema's in het rapport wordt die 'pauze' genuanceerd door erop te wijzen dat die periode begon met een zeer warm El Nino-jaar. El Nino is een cyclisch water- en klimaatpatroon dat een impact heeft in het bijzonder op de Stille Oceaan, maar ook op de rest van de wereld. Volgens het rapport is 15 jaar niet lang genoeg om conclusies te trekken uit de 'pauze'. 9. Oplossingen hebben ook neveneffecten Het klimaatpanel zegt tot slot dat mogelijke oplossingen voor en instrumenten tegen de klimaatwijziging (het zogenaamde geoengineering) weldegelijk potentieel hebben, maar niet zonder onbedoelde neveneffecten en langetermijngevolgen zijn. De auteurs deden geen gedetailleerd onderzoek naar die methodes, omdat die nog slechts weinig wetenschappelijk getoetst zijn. 10. Klimaatwijzigingen werken nog eeuwen door Nog volgens het rapport blijkt dat de meeste aspecten van de klimaatwijziging vele eeuwen zullen doorwerken, ook al wordt de CO2-uitstoot gestopt. Sommige gassen blijven langer dan 1.000 jaar in de atmosfeer hangen nadat ze uitgestoten zijn. Dat doet vermoeden dat een deel van de klimaatwijziging niet meer te stoppen of om te buigen is.

Politically, Gregory V acted consistently as the Emperor's representative in Rome and granted many exceptional privileges to monasteries within the Holy Roman Empire. One of his first acts was to crown Otto III Emperor on 21 May 996.[2] Together, they held a synod a few days after the coronation in which Arnulf, Archbishop of Reims, was ordered to be restored to his See of Reims, and Gerbert of Aurillac, the future Pope Silvester II, was condemned as an intruder. Robert II of France, who had been insisting on his right to appoint bishops, was ultimately forced to back down, and ultimately also to put aside his wife Bertha, by the rigorous enforcement of a sentence of excommunication on the kingdom.[3]
Until the conclusion of the council of Pavia in 997, Gregory V had a rival in the person of the antipope John XVI (997–998), whom Crescentius II and the nobles of Rome had chosen against the will of the youthful Emperor Otto III, Gregory's cousin. The revolt of Crescentius II was decisively suppressed by the Emperor, who marched upon Rome. John XVI fled, and Crescentius II shut himself up in the Castel Sant'Angelo. The Emperor's troops pursued the antipope, captured him, cut off his nose and ears, cut out his tongue, blinded him, and publicly degraded him before Otto III and Gregory V.[4] He was sent to the monastery of Fulda in Germany, where he lived until 1013. The Castel Sant'Angelo was besieged, and when it was taken in 998, Crescentius II was hanged upon its walls.
Gregory V died suddenly, not without suspicion of foul play, on 18 February 999. He is buried in St. Peter's Basilica near Pope Pelagius I. His successor was Gerbert, who took the name Silvester II.

This report written by 2000(!) scientists will be the most comprehensive body of evidence on global warming in years. It states that global warming is "unequivocally" human made, and that urgent action is required by our governments to avert the impact it could have on our earth through droughts, storms, sea level rise, melting glaciers and ice sheets. De Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller werd in juni te water gelaten op de Daewoo-werf in Zuid-Korea. Het schip is gebouwd voor vervoer tussen Azië en Noord-Europa, de drukste handelsroute ter wereld. In de Zuid-Koreaanse havenstad Busan werden de eerste containers geladen. Daarna zette het schip via Shanghai en Maleisië koers richting Suezkanaal en Rotterdam.

Het vervoer van goederen door megaschepen fascineerde journaliste Rose George dusdanig dat ze besloot met een aantal megaschepen mee te reizen om te zien hoe het leven op zo'n schip is. Over haar avonturen schreef ze een boek: Ninety Percent of Everthing. Het boek beschrijft de wereld waarin het niet raar is om een maand zonder internet te zitten, 2.000 mensen per jaar omkomen en waar je uitzicht bijna altijd water is. Maar misschien nog wel belangrijker: de wereld die zo'n 90 procent van alle goederen wereldwijd vervoert en op de juiste locatie brengt. Van kleding, tot eten, tot meubels en mobiele telefoons. Ook geeft George in haar boeken feiten weer uit de scheepvaart:
Het grootste containerschip kan 745 miljoen bananen in 15.000 containers vervoeren. Daarmee kan heel Europa en Noord-Amerika worden gevoed.
Als je alle containerschepen van rederij Maersk achter elkaar zet, kan het een lijn vormen die de halve wereld beslaat. Als je ze opstapelt, hebben ze de hoogte van 7,530 Eiffeltorens bij elkaar (2.439.720 meter).
Laad alle containers in trucks en ze vormen een file van bijna 100 kilometer.
In 2009 stootten de vijftien grootste schepen evenveel uitlaatgassen uit als 760 miljoen auto's.
Op dit moment varen er minimaal 20 miljoen containers over de wereld.
Tweederde van de crew aan boord van schepen hebben geen mogelijkheid om met de buitenwereld te communiceren, slechts twaalf procent heeft internet.
Slechts twee procent van de opvarenden is vrouw, meer dan een derde van de zeelieden zijn van Filipijnse afkomst; van hen varen er 250.000 mee.
In 2010 hielden Somalische piraten 544 zeevaarders gevangen, elke jaar sterven er 2.000 zeelieden op zee.
Wereldwijd wordt tussen de twee en tien procent van de schepen geïnspecteerd, de Verenigde Staten inspecteren ongeveer vijf procent van de zeventien miljoen containers die het land jaarlijks verwerkt.
Scheepvaart is goedkoop, zelfs zo goedkoop dat Schotland zijn vis via scheepvaart laat fileren in China.
De Verenigde Staten importeerden via scheepvaart in 2011 voor 1,73 biljoen dollar aan goederen. Tweederde van de olievoorraad van de VS komt via scheepvaart binnen.
Dagelijks zo'n 1,5 liter drinken is noodzakelijk. Allemaal leuk voor wie verslingerd is aan water, maar wat te doen als je er niet zo gek op bent? Met deze tips blijf je gehydrateerd en raak je het drinken niet zo snel beu.
1. Drink thee en experimenteer met verschillende smaken. Kamillethee maakt je bijvoorbeeld ontspannen, muntthee helpt je spijsvertering vooruit en rozenbottelthee is goed tegen verkoudheid. Beperkt het drinken van thee tot maximum 1/2 liter per dag.
2. Voeg een eenvoudig schijfje citroen of limoen toe aan je water. Dat maakt het heerlijk fris en is ook zeer dorstlessend.
3. Plet een beetje rood fruit en meng het goed. Doe in een theezeefje in heet water en laat het even staan. Een lichtjes zoet drankje is het resultaat.
4. Elk watermerk smaakt een beetje anders. Vergelijk de verschillende soorten en wie weet ontdek je zo wel je favoriete watertje.
5. Grenadine: een paar druppeltjes geven je water al meteen een heel andere kleur, geur en smaak. Niet mee overdrijven, in grenadine zit natuurlijk ook veel suiker. Ook in lightvarianten beschikbaar.
6. Leng je water eens aan met een beetje vruchtensap. Veel fruitsap drinken wordt afgeraden omdat je dan te veel suikers binnenkrijgt, maar op deze manier blijft je suikerinname beperkt.
7. Groentesap bezit alle goede eigenschappen van natuurlijk vruchtensap en een stuk minder calorieën. Groentesap met pulp is ook nog eens rijk aan vezels die helpen het hongergevoel te stillen.
8. Het voordeel van thuis zelf smoothies maken is dat je precies weet wat erin zit. Sap bevat veel calorieën maar ook de nodige vitamines en vezels. Je kan eindeloos variëren. Ideaal voor een flinke energieboost. Een smoothie kan af en toe als tussendoortje, maar bevat niet zoveel vocht en hoort dus niet in de watergroep.
9. Op een zomerse dag maak je makkelijk zelf een kan icetea. Je favoriete (afgekoelde) thee, wat ijs, eventueel wat schijfjes citroen, limoen of sinaasappel en klaar. Enkele blaadjes munt erbij zorgt voor extra smaak. Je maakt de icetea zoeter met wat honing of rietsuiker.
10. Een originele bijdrage voor water (niet in plaats van water, wel als extra) zijn watermeloenen en komkommers. Beide soorten bestaan voor ongeveer 97% uit water.
11. Ook koffie en light frisdrank kunnen al eens als afwisseling van water. Maximum 1/2 liter koffie, thee en light frisdrank per dag.

MASKS
He
called himself an etno-antropologist, specialized in studying small

documentaries and t.v.-appearences. This expedition had been a
success. His guide Moba had lead him to a mountainrange in northern
Mali, where he had witnessed impressing ceremonies, where stelted
Gods prohesied the future in a crazy dance.
As
in many African tribes masks played an important role in the
three-day festival. There were two groups of masks. The “tolerant
and empathic” ones and masks representing darkness, horror and
evil. The struggle between the two opposing forces would be decided,
which group would win and dominate the future cycles.
It
was tradition that the good Gods won. In the final confrontation the
dark spirits were bound and chained to the masks. You could feel the
burning evil, when the dark side, was carried off into the darkness
and the triumphant masks danced till first light.
“Moba”,
he cried out loud, “Moba!” His guide stuck his face out of the
hut. “Moba, I have one last question about the closing ceremony.
What happens to the evil masks, are they burned?” Moba nodded, “I
will ask the chief. He is inside.”
A
minute later Moba reappeared, a big smile on his face.
“The
chief says, that they are being sold to tourists!”

In
the early years contaminated material was simply buried, later on
underground facilities were build and, above ground, tanks for fluids
and other waste.
Recently
research showed, that radio-active substances had leaked into the
earth and reached under ground waterlevels.
Authorities
present the problem as local and under control (like Tepco does about
Fukusjima). They completely ignore, that the leaking started in the
60ties and that underground water flows like a river and is connected
to surface-water. The pollution started half a century ago and will
eventually spread around the world.
Water is a living organism, water is sacred, water is life, water is worth defending and protecting for those yet unborn. Rivers and lakes in Alberta don’t stop at provincial borders. These rivers and lakes flow throughout Canada and the United States, therefore everyone will be affected by the ominous bills which have become law. This means the previous 2.5 million lakes and rivers that were protected have been diminished to only 62 protected rivers and 97 lakes. If you enjoy the benefits of the Canadian outdoors, camping, canoeing, boating, fishing, for that matter clean drinking water, you need to ask yourself how will you be impacted by the sale of your water resources?

Als
gevolg van een verloren oorlog met Engeland, moesten de Nederlanden
hun handelspost in Noord-Amerika, Nieuw-Amsterdam, afstaan. De nieuwe
bezitters herdoopten het in “New York”.
Toch
heeft de Nederlandse aanwezigheid haar sporen achtergelaten.
“Brooklyn” is een verbastering van “Breukelen” en verwijst
“Flushing Meadows” naar Vlissingen. New York kent nog een
“Walstraat', “Amsterdamse” straat en een “Nassaustraat”. De
dollar is afgeleid van de Nederlandse daalder.
New
York kent ook een beroemde baseball-club: ” de Yankees”. Hier ook
weer Nederlandse “roots”. Niet-Nederlandse inwoners raakten in de
war van de namen van de Nederlanders. In hun oren heetten ze allemaal
“Jan” of “Kees”, wat hen de bijnaam “Yankees” opleverde.
De Nederlanders vertrokken, de bijnaam bleef hangen.
