OMD - ENOLA GAYE
Enola Gay is de naam van de Amerikaanse B-29 Superfortress-bommenwerper die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog op 6 augustus 1945 de eerste atoombom, met de naam Little Boy, boven Hiroshima afwierp. Hierdoor kwamen 78.000 mensen direct om. Door de na-effecten als gevolg van de radioactieve straling liep het dodental uiteindelijk op tot ongeveer 140.000 eind 1945.
Het vliegtuig, met het serienummer B-2945-MO 44-86292, was uitgekozen door kolonel Paul Tibbets bij de Martin Omaha-fabriek in Omaha, Nebraska en was speciaal voor deze vlucht aangepast. Zo werden de bewapening en bepantsering voor een groot deel verwijderd om gewicht te besparen, zodat het vliegtuig op grotere hoogte kon vliegen, buiten het bereik van het luchtafweergeschut.
De piloot, Paul Tibbets, noemde het vliegtuig naar zijn moeder: Enola Gay.
Tijdens de vlucht werd de Enola Gay vergezeld door The Great Artiste, een vliegtuig met opnameapparatuur en door The Necessary Evil, een vliegtuig met fotografen. KOLKATA: Afflicted with a rare disease that requires a fortune to treat, the parents of a 10-year-old boy in Shibpur, Howrah, are groping in the dark even as their son gradually slips into an abyss.
Arian Chowdhury is suffering from the Hunter syndrome, a genetic disease caused by mutation that leads to deposition of biomolecules in cells. As cells get progressively clogged, organs begin to fail, causing death. One in 2,00,000 suffers from the disease. Except in developed nations, most patients die young with parents unable to afford the lifelong treatment of Rs 1 crore a year.
In severe cases, children survive till 11-12 years. Arian's case is less severe. Doctors say he may live till 17-18.

The felony rose by 77% in six years, from 23,991 in 2006 to 42,580 in 2011, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). In comparison, murders remained around the 34,000 mark in the corresponding period and rapes rose by 24% (from 19,348 to 23,982).
Again, while the perception is that most abductions are carried out for ransom, in reality the main reason is marriage (92,866 cases from 2006 to 2011). Illicit intercourse is next on the list, but with 17,485 cases, is a distant second. Ransom is third, with 4,096 cases. Thus, ransom cases are just about 4.5% of marriage ones, and about 23.5% of illicit-intercourse cases. Other reasons include adoption, slavery (563 cases from 2006 to 2011), prostitution, begging (241), revenge and even camel racing (3 cases in 2007, 2 in 2010). Going by the number of slavery- and begging-related cases, though they are a very small fraction of the cases related to other reasons, they very much substantiate the abyss of human depravity portrayed in the film Slumdog Millionaire, which some critics had called apocryphal at the time of its release. One reason for abduction is also the sale of body parts; 1 case was registered in 2006, 10 in 2010 and 2 in 2011.

Centre to pay Rs 25 crore to dump Bhopal waste in Germany
NEW DELHI: A group of ministers (GoM) on the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster on Friday gave its approval to the the Madhya Pradesh government to dispose of 350 metric tonnes of Union Carbide chemical plant's toxic waste in Germany.The Centre will pay Rs 25 crore towards the cost of airlifting the waste that will be removed within a year. The details of the plan will be finalized within two weeks.

De meeste fruitdranken bevatten voornamelijk appel als
fruitsoort, terwijl de naam en de verpakking vaak andere vruchten als
hoofdingrediënt suggereren. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek van de Consumentenbond
naar de ingrediënten van fruitdranken. De resultaten staan in de Gezondgids van
juni/juli.
De Consumentenbond bestudeerde de etiketten van 170 fruitdranken met diverse smaken op hun fruitsoorten en -gehalte. Water is in de meeste gevallen het hoofdbestanddeel, gevolgd door vruchtensap. Dit vruchtensap bestaat dan in veel gevallen voor het grootste deel uit appel- of witte druivensap, terwijl op de voorkant van het pak de drank met bijvoorbeeld Bosvruchten of Rood Fruit wordt aangeduid. Van het ingrediënt wat prominent op het pak wordt vermeld, zit soms minder dan één eetlepel in een glas van 250 ml.
Suikers
Aan de meeste fruitdranken is naast de suikers uit het vruchtensap extra suiker toegevoegd. Bij de onderzochte fruitdranken varieert de totale hoeveelheid suiker tussen de 4 gram (light-variant) en 28 gram in een reguliere drank, zo'n zes klontjes per glas. Behalve dat suikers veel calorieën leveren, plegen fruitdranken een grote aanslag op tanden en kiezen. Suiker kan gaatjes in de tanden en kiezen veroorzaken, en door hun zuurgraad geven de fruitdranken tanderosie, een veel minder bekend fenomeen.

Wetenschappers van de Amerikaanse universiteit van Idaho ontdekten dat de activiteit van bepaalde genen bij de dikkop-elrits veranderde wanneer ze blootgesteld werd aan water met lage dosissen van twee antidepressiva, Prozac en venlafaxine, en carbamazepine, dat wordt gebruikt om epilepsieaanvallen onder controle te houden.
De 324 aangetaste genen worden bij de mens geassocieerd met autisme, wat er op wijst dat er een mogelijk verband bestaat tussen antidepressiva in het milieu en autisme bij genetisch kwetsbare mensen, zo meldt New Scientist. De oorzaak van autisme is tot nu toe nog steeds onbekend.
Het gebruik van antidepressiva is de voorbije 25 jaar dramatisch gestegen, zegt Michael Thomas van de universiteit van Idaho. Zo’n 80 procent van elk medicijn passeert rechtsreeks door het menselijke lichaam zonder dat het wordt afgebroken en komt op die manier in het afvalwater terecht. Waterzuiveringssystemen kunnen deze chemicaliën niet wegfilteren.
