Nederlandse meisjes krijgen steeds jonger hun regels

Nederlandse meisjes worden steeds jonger ongesteld. Dat blijkt uit een grootschalige studie bij onze noorderburen. Het is een tendens die de grenzen overschrijdt en ook bij ons het geval zou zijn.

De resultaten komen uit de Landelijke Groeistudie, een enquête die voor de vijfde keer heeft plaatsgevonden. De eerste editie ervan dateert van 1955 waardoor het voor de onderzoekers niet moeilijk was om gegevens te gaan vergelijken.

In het totaal werden 20.867 kinderen tussen 0 en 21 jaar – en hun ouders – door medewerkers van de Jeugdgezondheidszorg ondervraagd. Het ging niet alleen om meisjes van Nederlandse afkomst, maar ook om kinderen van Turkse en Marokkaanse origine. Bij de meisjes werd nagegaan wanneer zij voor het eerst menstrueerden, een vraag die in de vier vorige edities ook aan bod kwam.

Daaruit blijkt dat Nederlandse meisjes in 1955 voor het eerst menstrueerden op een mediane leeftijd van 13,66 jaar. In 1997 was dat al op 13,15 jaar en in 2009 op 13,05 jaar. Marokkaanse en Turkse meisjes krijgen nog vroeger hun regels. Daar waar dat in 1997 nog op 12,8 jaar (voor Turkse meisjes) en 12,9 jaar (voor Marokkaanse meisjes) was, daalde dat tot 12,5 jaar en 12,6 jaar in 2009.

Volgens de onderzoekers is die daling te wijten aan een verbeterde hygiëne, een betere voeding en behuizing en betere werkomstandigheden van de ouders. Obesitas speelt zeker ook een rol, maar zelfs wanneer het gewicht van de kinderen eruit werd gesorteerd, zag men nog altijd een daling van de leeftijd waarop de meisjes voor het eerst menstrueerden.

Deze tendens is daarom niet positief. Een vroege menarche is immers gelinkt aan meer psychosociale problemen en gezondheidsproblemen. Zo blijken vrouwen die opvallend vroeg hun eerste menstruatie kregen, vatbaarder zijn voor borstkanker, depressie en cardiovasculaire aandoeningen.

ELECTROSTATISCHE DETECTIE

Twee ontvoerde meisjes, een cynische dader en geavanceerde opsporingsmethoden - dat zijn de hoofdingrediënten van de nieuwste aflevering van 'Bewijs geleverd', een misdaadserie in Wetenschap in Beeld.

In deze zaak kwam de politie de dader op het spoor door een brief te analyseren die zijn slachtoffer onder dwang aan haar familie had geschreven. Op die brief stonden onzichtbare afdrukken van een boodschappenlijstje en een telefoonnummer, die op het bovenliggende - en afgescheurde - blaadje waren genoteerd. Het telefoonnummer leidde de politie naar de dader.

De technologie heet elektrostatische detectie. Schrijf je met een potlood of een pen op een stuk papier, dan laat je niet alleen op dat papier zelf een afdruk achter, maar ook op eventuele velletjes daaronder, zoals op een notitieblok.

Die afdrukken zijn vaak moeilijk of onmogelijk met het blote oog te lezen, maar zelfs de vaagste sporen kunnen nog zichtbaar worden gemaakt met een zogeheten elektrostatisch detectieapparaat (ESDA).

Met behulp van zo'n apparaat kan de technische recherche de afdruk versterken en bijvoorbeeld een telefoonnummer of een naam lezen in het patroon dat is ontstaan door de druk van de pen of het potlood. Ook als het papier met de afdrukken inmiddels beschreven is, kan de afdruk nog zichtbaar worden gemaakt.

Het document in kwestie wordt bedekt met een soort plastic en geladen met statische elektriciteit. Daarover wordt gekleurd poeder gestrooid met een andere elektrische lading. De geladen gebieden trekken dit poeder aan, waardoor de afdrukken duidelijk zichtbaar worden.

Wat is een coronavirus?
Coronavirussen zijn naast rhinovirussen de veroorzakers van een groot percentage van alle gewone verkoudheden bij volwassenen. Zij veroorzaken over het algemeen in de winter en vroeg in de lente een verkoudheid. Het coronavirus is ook de boosdoener van verschillende ziektes bij dieren.
Wat is de link met SARS?
Een bekende ziekte veroorzaakt door een coronavirus is SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome). De SARS-epidemie maakte tussen 2002 en 2003 meer dan 800 slachtoffers.
Wat is MERS?
Het nieuwe coronavirus, dat nu voor heel wat beroering zorgt door de dood van een Fransman, kreeg van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO de naam Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) omdat het ontstaan is in het Midden-Oosten. Het is een nieuw coronavirus dat ontdekt werd door dr. Ali Mohamed Zaki in een ziekenhuis in Jeddah in Saoedi-Arabië.
Is MERS gevaarlijk?
Op 29 mei 2013 waren er wereldwijd 49 gevallen van MERS bij de WHO gemeld, waarvan 27 met dodelijke afloop, vooral in Saoedi-Arabië. Volgens de WHO vormt het virus een ‘bedreiging voor de hele wereld’, waarmee de organisatie bedoelt dat het niet een fenomeen is wat één land op zichzelf kan oplossen. Maar voorlopig is MERS nog een medisch mysterie. De WHO roept daarom alle landen ter wereld op om samen te werken om het virus te bestuderen en aan te pakken.
Waar en bij wie komt MERS voor?
MERS is ontstaan in het Midden-Oosten, waar dus de meeste patiënten voorkomen. Er zijn ook gevallen van MERS in Frankrijk, Duistland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Alle Europese gevallen hebben in ieder geval een directe of indirecte link met het Midden-Oosten. In Frankrijk stierf een patiënt die het virus had opgelopen tijdens een reis naar het Midden-Oosten.
Het lijkt erop dat de ziekte voorkomt bij oudere mannen met andere medische aandoeningen. Dat laatste speelt volgen de WHO mogelijk een rol in de overdracht van het virus.
Wat zijn de symptomen van MERS?
Het virus doet zich voor als een verkoudheid en valt het ademhalingssysteem aan. Symptomen als koorts en hoesten kunnen leiden tot een longontsteking en nierfalen. Mogelijk kan er ook diarree optreden. De Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie weet nog niet hoe het virus zich verspreidt, dus ook niet hoe mensen het oplopen. Daarom is het voorlopig moeilijk om het virus te bestrijden.
Hoe wordt MERS genezen?
Er bestaat geen behandeling voor MERS. Er is ook geen vaccin. Zoals altijd gelden traditionele voorzorgsmaatregelen zoals een goede handhygiëne om de ziekte te voorkomen. (TE)

De Marsjeep Curiosity heeft nieuw bewijs geleverd dat er ooit water - en dus mogelijk ook leven - op Mars is geweest. Wetenschappers leiden dat af uit een studie van kiezelstenen.

Een nieuwe, maar zeer gedetailleerde studie van kiezelstenen op Mars heeft het tot nu beste bewijs geleverd dat er ooit water op de Rode Planeet heeft gestroomd, zo heeft een team rond Rebecca Williams van het Instituut voor Planeetwetenschappen in Tucson (Arizona) in het wetenschappelijk vakblad Science bericht op gezag van data aangereikt door de Amerikaanse Marsjeep Curiosity. Ook is nu meer geweten over de eigenschappen van die vermoede waterlopen.
Vulkaanuitbarsting
De jongste jaren waren er al meerdere aanwijzingen dat er ooit vloeibaar water op onze buurplaneet is geweest, zoals canyons en uitgedroogde meren. Maar die waren allemaal ook te verklaren aan de hand van plotselinge gebeurtenissen zoals het naar boven komen van grote massa's water uit de bevroren ondergrond, door toedoen van een meteorietinslag of een vulkaanuitbarsting.
Beste bewijs ooit
Maar nu pakken deskundigen met het beste bewijs ooit uit. Williams en co bestudeerden foto's die de robot Curiosity in de Gale-krater van zowat 515 kiezelstenen heeft genomen. De stenen zijn 2 tot 40 mm dik en bestaan uit een vast conglomeraat met zand, zoals typisch voor fluviatiele sedimenten op Aarde. Hun vorm toont dat water hen heeft gepolijst. Wanneer stenen door wind en zandstormen verweren, worden zij rauw en kantig. Maar volgens Asmus Koefoed van het aan de studie deelnemende Niels-Bohr Instituut in Kopenhagen is te zien dat nagenoeg alle van de 515 geanalyseerde kiezelstenen vlak, glad en afgeslepen zijn.

Toch blijft het twee-kindgezin veruit favoriet. Ruim de helft van de een miljoen gezinnen met een jongste kind in de leeftijd van 8 tot 12 jaar telt twee thuiswonende kinderen.

Zielig?

Overigens is het niet ’zielig’ om enig kind te zijn. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat enig kinderen gemiddeld gelukkiger zijn dan zij die moeten vechten met hun broers en zussen om aandacht te vragen van hun ouders.

So given all this it might make you wonder, does art imitate life, or does life imitate art. Likewise isn’t it interesting how most of the people in America sleep quite well at night while their military forces routinely invade, slaughter and steal from other nations at will, as of course all global empires have done historically.
This time the global civilian death toll is well over one million in the past decade alone, many of them women and children, and yet the same American culture shutters in horror and confusion when some dude stumbles into an American school yard and randomly wipes out a couple dozen or so kids.

For two months anti-government protesters, the so-called red shirts, had taken over key parts of downtown Bangkok, demanding for Abhisit Vejjajiva, the country’s current prime minister, to step down, dissolve parliament, and call fresh elections.
The sit-ins had paralyzed Bangkok and threatened to rock the Thai economy, which is the second largest in Southeast Asia.
The red shirts have been calling for Abhisit’s resignation since he came to power in 2009 – after Thaksin Shinawatra, the country’s populist prime minister, was ousted in a bloodless military coup in 2006.

'Extreem weer wordt extremer'

1. ‘Weerwapens van de overheid’
De Amerikaanse radiopresentator Alex Jones suggereerde na de orkaan in de Amerikaanse staat Oklahoma van 20 mei dat de Amerikaanse overheid weleens de boosdoener zou kunnen zijn geweest. Jones sloot niet uit dat er ook natuurlijke tornado’s bestaan, maar beweerde wel dat ‘ze’ – mits de juiste weersomstandigheden – ‘hun weerwapens kunnen gebruiken om groepen tornado’s te creëren en besturen’.
2. Straf voor homoseksualiteit
Volgens Fred Phelps jr., lid van de fundamentalistische Westboro Baptist Chuch, is het geen toeval dat Oklahoma net nu door een tornado getroffen werd. Phelps twitterde daags na de ramp dat God de staat op die manier straft voor Jason Collins, de NBA-speler die zich onlangs outte als homo. Onrechtstreeks weliswaar, want Collins komt uit Californië en speelt voor Washington. Het was NBA-collega Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder) die met zijn steunbetuiging voor Collins de emmer deed overlopen, aldus Phelps.
3. Regenboogvlaggen veroorzaken natuurrampen
De Amerikaanse televisiepredikant Pat Robertson waarschuwt al langer voor een link tussen homoseksualiteit en natuurfenomenen. Zo ook toen de Amerikaanse stad Orlando in Florida in 1998 aankondigde regenboogvlaggen te zullen ophangen in de straten naar aanleiding van de jaarlijkse ‘Gay Days’ in pretpark Disney World. Robertson noemde de beslissing onverstandig, en voorspelde ‘terreurbommen, aardbevingen, tornado’s en mogelijk een meteorietinslag’.
4. Klimaatopwarming is een links complot
Jim Inhofe, senator voor Oklahoma, verweet de Amerikaanse media enkele jaren zich schuldig te maken aan ‘klimaatporno’. Hij ziet daarin een links complot met als voornaamste doel het installeren van een systeem van ‘global governance’. De Republikein vergeleek in het verleden milieubewegingen en het Amerikaanse milieuagentschap EPA met respectievelijk het ‘Derde Rijk’ en ‘de Gestapo’. Hoewel Inhofe regelmatig ‘wetenschappelijk bewijs’ citeert voor zijn stelling, noemt hij zijn overtuigingen vooral Bijbels geïnspireerd.
5. Amerikaans beleid tegenover Israël
‘Wanneer we druk zetten op Israël, leidt dat tot enorme gebeurtenissen, vaak binnen 24 uur.’ Het zijn de woorden van Witte Huis-verslaggever William Koenig. Zo schreef hij Orkaan Sandy, die in 2012 de Amerikaanse Oostkust trof, toe aan het feit dat zowel Republikeinen als Democraten zich daags voordien voor de Tweestatenoplossing uitspraken voor het Israëlisch-Palestijns conflict. In een boek uit 2008 toonde Koenig al een ‘correlatie’ aan tussen natuurrampen en de Israëlretoriek van de voormalige presidenten Bill Clinton en George W. Bush. (JDW)

Salmon Confidential is a new film on the government cover up of what is killing BC’s wild salmon.
When biologist Alexandra Morton discovers BC’s wild salmon are testing positive for dangerous European salmon viruses associated with salmon farming worldwide, a chain of events is set off by government to suppress the findings.
Tracking viruses, Morton moves from courtrooms, into British Columbia’s most remote rivers, Vancouver grocery stores and sushi restaurants.
The film documents Morton’s journey as she attempts to overcome government and industry roadblocks thrown in her path and works to bring critical information to the public in time to save BC’s wild salmon.
The film provides surprising insight into the inner workings of government agencies, as well as rare footage of the bureaucrats tasked with managing our fish and the safety of our food supply.

Kikker, aap en zwam in top 10 'vreemdste ontdekkingen' 2012

De kikker Paedophryne amauensis is het kleinste gewervelde dier ter wereld

Een slechts zeven millimeter grote kikker en een aap met een stralend blauwe streep boven het achterwerk en het geslachtsdeel, ze staan beide in de top 10 van "vreemdste ontdekkingen" van 2012.
Volgens het International Institute for Species Exploration in Tempe, Arizona leven er nu tien tot twaalf miljoen soorten op aarde, de microbes slechts zijdelings meegeteld. De kikker met de Latijnse naam 'Paedophryne amauensis' is nu het kleinste bekende gewervelde dier ter wereld en leeft in het regenwoud van Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea.
Apendans
In Afrika ontdekten biologen voor het eerst in 28 jaar een nog onbekende apensoort. Het Lesula-aapje leeft verborgen in het Lomami-gebied van Congo en heeft ogen die gelijken op die van de mens. De mannetjes hebben echter nog een ander opvallend kenmerk: een stralend blauwe streep boven het achterwerk en het geslachtsdeel. Samen met de vrouwtjes groeten ze 's morgens op geheel eigen manier de dingen: met veel lawaai en hun eigen interpretatie van de apendans.
Vleesetende zwam
Nog bij de tien "vreemdste ontdekkingen" zijn een vleesetende zwam die op een diepte van drie kilometer in de Grote Oceaan voor de kust van Californië leeft, en een viooltje van nauwelijks een centimeter hoog dat een voorlopig onbekend bestaan leidde hoog in de Peruaanse Andes.

Aangezien het aantal soorten op aarde snel de dieperik ingaat, moet de zoektocht naar nog onbekende organismes een tandje bijsteken, vindt Quentin Wheeler, directeur van het International Institute for Species Exploration.

Momenteel worden ongeveer 18.000 soorten per jaar ontdekt. Bedoeling is de ontbrekende tien miljoen tegen ongeveer 2065 te identificeren. (Belga/INM)

In the face of state repression and international indifference West Papuan activists have been locked in a life or death struggle for independence. People and Power finds out what is behind one of the most forgotten conflicts in the world.
When the Dutch decolonized their East Indies empire after the Second World War they handed it all to the emergent country of Indonesia – all except the territory of West Papua, which forms one half of New Guinea, the second largest island on Earth.
This remarkable landmass – split neatly by colonial powers into West Papua and Papua New Guinea – is like few other places in the world.
Its mountainous terrain and dense rainforests have spawned extraordinary linguistic diversity among its indigenous population, some of whom are still in uncontacted tribes.
Five decades ago few, if any of these tribes, showed any desire for their land to become an extension of Indonesia, a new nation state with which they shared neither history, culture, religion nor ethnicity, but which wanted resource-rich West Papua within its borders.
