Dwarka: The Lost Golden City

The story of the Golden City of Lord Krishna is one of the most popular and beloved tales attributed to

Hinduism’s colorful past. Surrounded on all sides by the sea, Dwarka is said to have been so grand that

even the sea around it glittered with a golden hue. It was called Dwarka, “The Golden City” and from it

Lord Krishna ruled over his kingdom with love and justice.

The ancient tales of Lord Krishna say he ruled his kingdom from Dwarka until he deemed it was time to

return to his heavenly abode. Then, when he left the worldly plane behind, the Golden City of Dwarka

disappeared.

There are conflicting reports of how the Golden City vanished following Lord Krishna’s departure. One

account claims that Dwarka shrank gradually, until it simply was no more. Another account tells of a

war between Lord Krishna and beings who attacked the city from flying vehicles, using lightning as

weapons. The damage to Dwarka, this tale tells, was so severe that Lord Krishna had to abandon the city,

and when he did, it sank into the sea.

Who were these enemies that rode on flying vehicles and wielded lightning-like weapons? Did the

weapons really project lightning? Or did it just look like lightning, but in reality were more like energy

weapons from some highly advanced technology?
