In 1996 TWA 800 took off from Kennedy-airport for a transatlantic flight to Paris. It had over 200 passengers on board. Eye-witnesses saw how the climbing plane suddenly exploded and plunged down into the coastal waters. Nobody survived the crash.

Lately two Malaysian did not land, one confirmed brought down by a missile, A Russian plane was shot down over Egypt by an ISIS-faction. It will get more common. The rockets are easy to handle and small. Every Jihadist can fire one.

These rockets are made in the West, Russia or China. They are sold to the highest bidder, wether it be the US-Navy or Al-Qaida in Yemen.
