Student:
“Master, master Klaas told us about Athonie Fokker, who played an
important role during “the Great War”.”
Master:
“Yes, he was a briljant aerial engineer. A new form of transport,
technically made possible around 1900. You can compare him with Willi
Messerschmidt, who built aeroplanes for the Nazi-Luftwaffe, during
World War 2. Fokker did the same for the German Emperor, during the
First one.”
Student:
“Master Klaas said that the military use of aeroplanes, completely
changed the battlefield. The battle in the skies, Master, was
completely new.”
Master:
“In this time and age it was. First balloons were used for military
reconnaisance. But the soldiers who were lifted up to observe the
enemy, were sitting ducks, when the balloon was hit. Aeroplanes were
much more useful to take pictures and gather information. Soon, the
planes carried small bombs, to be used against enemy-lines. This
proved quite in-effective. The First World War was too short for
effective bombers to be developed. London was bombed by
Zeppelin-airships and primitive bombers. The world has to wait for
the next war, to see them in action in massive numbers.”
Student:
“This was a real war in the skies, Master.”
Master:
“The real war in the skies started late 1915. Before that, when
Allied or German planes met, they could only greet eachother. It was
not possible to fire a machine-gun, without damaging the fuselage or
the engine. One man changed that. He developed a device, that made it
possible to fire through a moving propeller. He sold the invention to
the German army. It made the German airmen almost invincible. A
British pilot had a life-expectancy of 11 days! This superiority
lasted for nine months, before the British restored the balance.”
Student:
“Master, who invented such a deadly device?”
Master:
“It was Anthonie Fokker. This phase of the air-war is called
“Fokker's terror.””
