The pagan Frisian site the Christian missionaries and mercenaries destroyed, has always been a religious powerpoint, even now, when the "Grote of Oude kerk" is open for services. This is a scarce and hidden moment on sundaymorning at 9.30. The old church is run by the Reformed church since the 17th century. The same denomination exploits the "Dom-church" in Utrecht. Maybe the name "The Dom van Almenum" a mockery of the locals. Frentsjer a neighbouring city and archrival belonged to the Archbisshop of Utrecht. Frentsjer was a dedicated opponent and competitor, spiritually and material of the City of the Temple. Utrecht was the city with a real Dom. Undisputable was the fact that the Michaelschurch stood on the highest point in the region and could be seen from afar, on water or land.
Like I said, this is one of the oldest and most interesting places in the city of the Temple, though hardly any visitor is being seen.
Traditionally a church dedicated to Saint Michael is build upon a hill or mountain and it is surrounded by a defensive circle. In this case camouflaged by a walking-path inlaid by esoteric symbols. One of them depicting Atlantis and its all-seeing eye.
